Abstract
The vibrational overtone spectra of ethylene glycol diacrylate (EGDA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) monomers and corresponding polymers were recorded in the spectral range 4500–15 000 cm−1. This spectral range encompasses the first through the fourth CH stretch vibrational overtone transitions. The CH stretch spectral features were assigned by a comparison of the number and type of different CH oscillators in the two compounds and a comparison to the spectra of acrylic acid and ethylene glycol diisobutyrate. Peaks corresponding to transitions for the vinyl, methylenic, and methyl types of the CH stretch were identified. The anharmonicities and mechanical frequencies for each progression in each monomer and polymer sample are reported. From the integrated areas of the vinyl and methyl/methylenic peaks for the first, second, third, and fourth vibrational overtone transitions of EGDMA, the degree of polymerization was calculated. These results were compared to the degree of polymerization determined from IR spectroscopy.
