1. The “surface phases” are in fact inhomogeneous textures that should not be confused with true bulk phases, though true phase transitions may occur between such distinct textures. Moreover, the terms “Anticlinic” and “Synclinic” are conventionally used in the literature in order to characterize the respective orientations of the Smectic C* tilt vector at the two surfaces, and not the local anticlinic and synclinic orders of, e.g., ferro- and antiferro-electric bulk phases.
