Abstract

The article describes the specifics of keeping wood mice in captivity, studied on the example of one pair (♀+♂) found at the age of about two weeks. The dynamics of growth and formation of adult species characteristics, diet, growth, and maturation rates were traced, and the rapid onset of sexual maturity at the age of about two months was noted. Various kinds of behaviour and their changes during growth and development are described, including investigative activity, locomotor and diurnal activity, gnawing, foraging and feeding preferences, nest attachment, preparation for wintering, reaction to humans, etc. The species appeared to be easy to keep in captivity. The descriptions are illustrated with photographs of animals of different ages and in different environments.
