Abstract
This study describes the pronouns it, this, and that in classroom teaching. We first show that the pronoun it and the demonstrative pronouns this and that are relatively frequent in classroom teaching but their referential properties have been understudied. The study then provides a detailed comparison of the referential properties of these pronouns in a sub-corpus of classroom teaching with low interactivity and illustrate common collocates of the pronouns as well as how the pronouns are used to manage information in this register. We propose that a clear description of how reference is established and maintained in classroom teaching adds to descriptions of this register, and that further research in this area can aid our understanding of the classroom teaching register (including extending an analysis to classroom teaching with varying levels of interactivity).
