Abstract

ABSTRACT Patient education is one of the more rewarding aspects of a dermatology visit. However, the time constraints placed upon staff and providers limits the amount of time available to spend on education. Having detailed patient handouts readily available ensures that patients receive all the necessary information, beyond what is discussed during the visit. Patient handouts also serve as a reference for patients to return to once they leave the office and inevitably forget some of the details that were discussed. Sun protection is one of the most important aspects of skin cancer prevention education. Below is a comprehensive overview of sun protection that addresses many of the questions patients have regarding sunscreen use and sun protection as a whole. The “key takeaways” at the end of the article can easily be converted into a printable patient handout.
