The incidence of infections with Candida parapsilosis has been increasing, and this fungus is the second most commonly isolated Candida species from blood cultures. It has an affinity for intravascular devices, prosthetic devices, and total parenteral nutrition. We describe an uncommonly reported case of breakthrough bloodstream infection with C. parapsilosis in a patient receiving chronic total parenteral nutrition who was receiving micafungin for Candida glabrata fungemia. We also briefly discuss the challenges of diagnosis and management of fungemia caused by different Candida species.
