Abstract
Gerontologist Olivia Pereira-Smith was born and educated in Bombay, India, but in the early 1970s, prospects for a science career in that country seemed dim for lack of resources. So she immigrated to the United States for master's degree studies at the University of California, Berkeley, training that led her into the field of cellular aging. After earning a Ph.D., she conducted experiments that helped elucidate the genetics of cell immortality. Today she is following the same scientific trail at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, where she collaborates closely with her husband and research partner, James Smith.
