5. GRACE launched in March 2002 and administered by NASA and the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt is mapping Earth's gravity field every 30 days during its 10- to 11-year lifetime. GRACE consists of two identical satellites in identical orbits separated by ∼220 km. The satellites use microwaves to monitor their separation distance. Onboard accelerometers and Global Positioning System receivers detect nongravitational accelerations and geocentric orbital motion.
