Abstract
This article presents the results of an empirical study aimed at establishing the prevalence and types of personality disorders encountered among women in custody in Romanian prisons. It is important to emphasize that incarcerated women in Romania represent a category of inmates that has been insufficiently investigated regarding personality disorders. To date, there are no specific studies conducted among this group of inmates in Romania on this topic. The research sample consisted of definitively sentenced incarcerated women (N=200 respondents) serving their sentences in the only prison in Romania that exclusively houses women, distributed across all detention regimes. The SCID-II Personality Questionnaire was used, designed to identify and evaluate personality disorders according to the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). The percentage distribution shows that obsessive-compulsive (82%) and borderline (80%) personality disorders are among the most prevalent observed in incarcerated women included in this study. For other personality disorders, a prevalence ranging from 11,5% to 75% was observed. The result of this research have significant practical implications, providing a solid foundation for the development of specific intervention programs dedicated to this category. Thus, specialists in the penitentiary administration system can use this data to create programs based on a genuine understanding of these women`s profiles.
