Abstract

Abstract During winter storms in 2014 and 2017, strong waves threw hundreds of timbers and artefacts into the Belinho beach in the North of Portugal. These were the remains of what was later discovered to be a 16th -century shipwreck, probably originating from Northern Europe. This paper aims to study the material culture associated with that site, mainly formed by hundreds of pewter, brass, lead, iron, and stone artefacts, discussing the importance of studying cargo. Most of these objects seem to have belonged to the ship’s shipment and are tied to a European trade system reflecting economic, cultural, and symbolic behaviours.
