Abstract
Abstract
Benishangul Gumuz Region in Ethiopia has been experiencing rapid land use and land cover change through illegal deforestation for shifting agriculture, livestock production, and fuel consumption. However, a sustainable land management program (SLMP) may be the way to curb this rapid land use land cover change in the micro watershed level in the Region. On the basis of this, to assess, the benefits after a 12-year micro watershed restoration effort, this research was conducted in two micro watersheds to investigate the land use land cover dynamics using intensive field observation, interview, and time series Landsat ( ETM + and OLI_TIRS) satellite data since 2010 up to 2021. After classifying the land use of the two micro watersheds (Amba1 and Temba) as Forest Lands, Bush Lands, Settlements, Grass Lands, Crop Lands, and Bare Lands for the years 2010, 2015, and 2021 the calculation of land use change dynamics result indicates significant incensement for forest land and settlements area from the year 2010 up to 2021. Whereas, the area of Bare Lands indicates a significant decrement up to 82.234% in Amba1 micro watershed. This result is an indicator that, sustainable land management program (SLMP) intervention can greatly improve land cover change for batter use in Ethiopia.
