Abstract

Abstract It designs a disastrous earthquake as the referenced event, the known Chi-chi earthquake (1999) in Taiwan, to characterize and compare a monitored displacement of a building before and after that event. It suggests that period and damping nearly increase as the magnitude increases for the smaller distance between the building and the hypocenter. After the earthquake, it can regress the estimated best period as a function of PGA. This research performs a practical assessment of the natural vibration of a building to an attic-basement system for long-term observation of earthquake activities. It presents a novel and realistic evaluation of the natural vibration of a building under disastrous earthquake activities. Assessing building vibration evolution using historical long-term strong motion data before and after a devastating earthquake to check a building's status can be feasible and reachable. The result provides relevant safety arguments for future maintenance.
