Faunistics of Syrphid flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) from Chakesar Valley, District Shangla, Pakistan and their biogeographic association

Abstract

Abstract Pakistan is represented by the Afrotropical, Palearctic, and Oriental biogeographical zones, each of which has its own flora, fauna, climate, and ecology. The Syrphid fauna's current biogeographic distribution is the result of an effort to classify 16 taxa from the district of Shangla in the Chakesar Valley in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The Syrphid fauna's current biogeographic distribution is the result of an effort to classify 17 taxa from the district of Shangla in the Chakesar Valley. All the reported species are new to the study area. The reported 17 taxa belong to the nine genera in the subfamilies Syrphinae and Eristalinae. The subfamily Syrphinae represented 11 species, i.e., Episyrphus balteatus, Episyrphus viridaureus, Ischiodon scutellaris, Eupeodes corollae, Eupeodes latifasciatus, Eupeodes sp., Scaeva latimaculata, Scaeva pyrastri, Sphaerophoria indiana, Sphaerophoria sp., and Melanostoma orientale. Whereas, subfamily Eristalinae included six species with the names Eristalis tenax, Eristalis (Eoseristalis) cerealis, Eristalis (Eoseristalis) arbustorum, Eristalinus (Eristalinus) aeneus, Syritta orientalis, and Syritta pipiens. Photographs of all the species are provided in this study.
