Abstract

Abstract Ensuring the reliable operation of drilling risers in offshore oil and gas is heavily reliant on integrity inspections. This piece delves into the utilization of cutting-edge ultrasound technologies—specifically Phased Array and Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)—to conduct these inspections. While traditional methods like visual checks, magnetic particle testing, and standard ultrasound have limitations in detecting internal defects, Phased Array and TOFD excel with superior accuracy, sensitivity, and coverage. Exploring their principles and mechanisms, the article emphasizes their advantages over conventional ultrasound for inspecting welds, corrosion, and other potential integrity issues within riser components. The difficulties linked with examining risers once they are fully assembled are addressed, offering solutions to overcome these hurdles. Case studies are presented to showcase how Phased Array and TOFD effectively identify Serious flaws like fatigue cracks and thinning of wallsThe article emphasizes the need for a comprehensive inspection strategy that combines multiple techniques to thoroughly evaluate drilling riser integrity. Additionally, it discusses integrating advanced ultrasound technologies into existing inspection programs, covering aspects like equipment selection, personnel training, and data analysis considerations. Ultimately, this article spotlights the significant strides made in drilling riser integrity inspection thanks to advanced ultrasound technologies.
