Abstract
Governing differential equations on many engineering problems can be realistically expressed in fuzzy form because uncertainty is an inherited feature of real-world engineering problems. In this paper, a new approach for solving second-order fuzzy differential equations (FDEs) is proposed. We adopt α-cut sets to reduce the second-order FDE to an interval-valued differential equation. Subsequently, an optimization problem is defined that its optimal solution is the approximate solution of the original second-order FDE. The high efficiency of the proposed method in approximating the analytical solutions is illustrated by solving a few engineering problems.
