The relationship of smoking to mediastinal tumors

Abstract

Abstract Background and Aim: There has been a significant increase in the incidence of malignant mediastinal tumors over the past four decades. The presentation varies from asymptomatic lesions discovered incidentally on imaging to severe, life-threatening lesions. Smoking is considered an important risk factor for the occurrence of these lesions. Therefore, the aim of the research focused on studying the relationship between smoking and mediastinal tumors. Methods and material: An observational study in the style of a cross-sectional study. This study targeted visitors to Damascus Hospital, where the sample was selected randomly, and about (100) patients were selected who met specific admission criteria, the most important of which was the presence of sufficient information in the file, while the Exclude all patients according to specific exclusion criteria. Results It was found that there was a statistically significant relationship between the type of tumor and smoking (P, 0.006, 30.556), there is a significant relationship between the histological classification of neuromediastinal tumor and smoking (P, 0.000, There is a significant relationship between lymphoma (histological type, histological classification) and smoking (P, 0.000, 0.000, respectively), there is a relationship between the type of mediastinal tumor and smoking (P, 0.001), there is a relationship between the presence of smoking metastases (P, 0.042), and the presence of Significant relationship between survival, prognosis and smoking (P, 0.000). Conclusion Continuous surveillance and monitoring of epidemiological trends and patterns in mediastinal tumors to inform clinical practices and research efforts. Smoking has a statistically significant relationship with mediastinal tumors, their stages, classification, survival rate, and the presence of metastases, and it should be quit.
