Abstract

Abstract This paper attempts to examine the change in cropping pattern and crop combination in Karnal District of Haryana. The change in cropping pattern in the study area examined to understand the share of various crops in the study area during a particular period of time 2010–11 to 2019–20. Haryana is a state with a thriving agriculture sector. Wheat and rice are the two main crops grown in Haryana, and they are followed in importance by sugarcane, gram, barley, cotton, oil seeds, bajra, jawar, etc. (Kumar, 2017). A particular crop rarely occupies a position in complete isolation from other crops in a given area at a given time since crops are typically cultivated in combinations. The extent of the crop lands is determined by socio-economic interactions, while their shape is determined by physical variables. In particular, the study of comprehensive area development planning benefits from the research of crop combinations (Murugesan et al., 2018). Considering that it provides a solid foundation for agricultural regionalization, the study of crop combination and crop intensity is a crucial component of agricultural geography. Geographers and agricultural land-use planners have recently become interested in the definition of crop combinations.
