Development and validation of the pharmacist care model and definitions

Abstract

Abstract Aims The aim of this study was to develop and validate the pharmacist care model and definitions Methodology The pharmacist care model and definitions were developed and validated based on many steps, including an extensive literature review, experts’ opinions, and the Delphi method. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 21 (SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 21.0, IBM Corp., USA). The qualitative part was manually analyzed, then summarized all transcripts. Results After an extensive literature review, discussion with experts and three rounds of the Delphi method with 70 international experts, including university professors and pharmacists, the pharmacist care model and definitions were developed and validated. The pharmacist care model contains the following themes: preventive medicine, self-care, dispensing and counselling, diseases and conditions management, patient & medications safety, tele-pharmacy, training pharmacy students and research. Five definitions of pharmacist care were developed during the literature review, qualitative interview, and rounds 1 and 2; however, the consensus was achieved for three definitions only, definition one with 92.42% agreement, definition two with 86.36% agreement and definition three with 80.30% agreement. Conclusion The pharmacist care model and definitions were developed and validated have been developed and validated and can be used to represent the actual contribution and impact of pharmacists on the patient’s care and health.
