Aim: Emotional intelligence (EI) is linked to individual well-being and has a positive effect on patient care. This study was aimed at assessing and comparing the EI levels demonstrated by students at one university in Saudi Arabia who studied had psychiatric and mental health nursing and those who had studied nursing fundamental of nursing courses but had not yet taken psychiatric nursing courses. Design: A descriptive and comparative study designMethods: Data were collected from all second- and third-year nursing students using the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT). Results: Finding indicate that students who had studied only nursing fundamentals demonstrated lower EI than those who were completing psychiatric and mental health nursing courses. Moreover, increased EI was related to the education level of the participant’s father and being the eldest child in the family
