Abstract

Abstract When sewage is improperly released into running streams, its physical and chemical components deteriorate, eventually destroying marine life viability. The current study sought to evaluate the efficacy of wastewater treatment by elucidating the physical and chemical parameters of water samples collected from the Jeddah coastline. During the summer of 2014, samples were collected from one uncontaminated zone and two contaminated areas (sewage-groundwater and sewage-port) along the Saudi Red Sea. The level of nutrients significantly differs between uncontaminated and contaminated water samples. In contrast, pH, temperature, and salinity remain consistent in all three tested samples. The findings revealed that sewage discharge significantly influences the chemical and physical properties of the Saudi Red Sea seawater. Therefore, it is recommended that local and government officials promote awareness and support proper wastewater treatment by enhancing the abilities of available wastewater plants.
