Abstract

Abstract Labor force participation of women in urban India remained stagnated at around 18% since 1980s. Against the conventional understanding, significant progress in female education, extraordinary reductions in fertility rates, and great economic growth has not led to improvement of labor force participation among women in India. This paper attempts to provide an insight into the complex nature of labor force participation of women in urban India. Using the unit level data of NSS quinquennial rounds and PLFS, this paper analyses the labor force participation of urban married women - firstly, the gender gaps in urban labor markets and changes over a period of time; secondly, trends and patterns of married women’s labor force participation from 2004-05 to 2018-19; and thirdly, a cross examination across age, level of education, occupation, work status. Lastly, the paper investigates the activity engagement of out of labor force women belonging to different education levels.
