Abstract

Abstract The rapid growth of renewable energy is heading to use different types of hydropower energy applications. While the water flows at riverine systems, canals, streams, dykes, and channels with low water velocity and ultra-low head of water; several methods are used to enhance the gravitational water vortex turbine. A numerical model has simulated the artificially induced gravitational water vortex and the attached water turbine. A validated model was used to investigate different basin parameters to enhance the overall performance, such as the airfoil types, spacing and the sizing on the basin wall. Results showed that the power coefficient of the runner is improved by using a helical airfoil on the basin wall of thick airfoil with small chord length and narrow spacing. The simulation showed the spacing of 50mm, sizing of 35mm and airfoil of NACA0024 had the best performance. Therefore, airfoil profiles are simulated having the best characteristics of airfoils, sizing and spacing. Whereas the results indicated the NACA0024, sizing of 35mm and spacing of 50mm has the highest hydrodynamics characteristics.
