A study of chronic suppurative otitis media cases in Damascus Hospital and the Red Crescent Hospital

Research objective: To study cases of chronic suppurative otitis media, their symptoms and factors that predispose to its occurrence, and to study the surgical methods used in treatment in cases with both malignant and benign manifestations. Methods and materials: A retrospective study was conducted on a sample of 131 patients with chronic suppurative otitis media attending Damascus Hospital and the Red Crescent Hospital in Damascus during the years from 2014 AD to 2020 AD. The samples were collected through a paper form, and the data were analyzed through a statistics program. SPSS-26, and p>Value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The sample size was 131 patients, and the percentage of males and females was 40.5% and 59.5%, respectively. The average age of the patients was (41.6) with a standard deviation of (6.2). The percentage of infection in the left ear was 51.1%, the most common in the right ear was 48.1. The most common symptom observed was gonorrhea. Itching, hearing loss, and tinnitus occurred at a rate of 89.3%. Most of the types of gonorrhea were intermittent and continuous, at rates of 44.2% and 29%, respectively. Most patients had moderate to severe hearing loss at rates of 38.9% and 19.8%, respectively. Most of the patients had mixed and conductive hearing loss, with rates of 38.9% and 34.4%, respectively. The rate of perforation of the central and marginal tympanic membrane was 50.4% and 13.7%, respectively. The most common risk factors for allergic rhinitis, frequency deviation, and keratinomegaly were 24.4%. % and keratomegaly alone 24.4%, the most common complication is ossicle sclerosis at 8.3%, and 90.9% were managed surgically, there is a significant relationship between the bony air gap and the type of perforation (benign and malignant), (P, 0.02), there is a significant relationship between the condition of the ossicles. (benign, sclerosis, necrosis), and perforation pattern (benign, malignant), (P, 0.009).
