Abstract
Abstract
This study generates a classification of 26 European OECD countries with respect to care regimes. We build upon the literature on the dimensions of defamilialization and familialism and empirically test how these two dimensions indicate different types of care regimes. Using Latent Profile Analysis, we group the 26 countries based on five indicators of institutional elderly care. These indicators cover formal elder care support in care in kind as well as in financial support. The results reveal three care regime types: ‘defamilialized’; ‘medium familialism’; and ‘familialism-by-default’. This classification contributes to developing a theoretical framework of care institutions.
