Abstract
Generative AI tools have sparked excitement and concern in academic and educational circles. Numerous studies have explored its potential impact on education. The present qualitative research is an intellectual effort to investigate and highlight the effects of GenAI, presenting possibilities, implications, and concerns associated with its integration into educational systems from Pakistani university teachers' perspectives. With Purposive sampling eight faculty members from public and private universities with at least three years of experience in higher education and have knowledge and practice of Gen AI tools were interviewed. A semi-structured interview guide was developed with previous literature available. Following all the ethical guidelines of data collection, thematic analysis was carried out, three superordinate themes were extracted including the Benefits and opportunities of using Gen AI, the Concerns and Limitations of Gen AI, and Balancing Technology and Creativity. Further eight subordinate themes were also generated depending on different codes and categories. Results indicated that incorporating Gen AI into academic settings can make teaching and learning more effective that allow students to enhance their learning and teachers can make their classroom more engaging and interactive. However, if not used responsibly and ethically, there can be many challenges that lead to hampering cognitive, creative and analytical abilities of students. To create a balance between human and artificial intelligence it is the responsibility of teachers and institutions to develop a thorough and well-versed policy for the use of Gen AI in academia.
