Abstract
Abstract
Background
Pseudomonas oleovorans (P. oleovorans) is an environmental isolate and rarely implicated in human infections. The bacterium has been isolated only in one reported case of blood infections. This case report describes the isolation of a rare Pseudomonas bacterium in a patient presenting with sepsis.
Case presentation
A 72-year-old woman was presented to a hospital in the Ordos of China, with a 2-day history of fever, chills, abdominal pain and nausea. P. oleovorans was identified in the patient’s blood culture using the Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The patient discharged on piperacillin-tazobactam therapy 3 weeks after admission.
Conclusions
These findings suggest that less common species of Pseudomonas need to be identified accurately. P. oleovorans is a known environmental contaminant and must also be considered as a potential pathogen.
