Abstract
Abstract
Tuticorin area is populated with a large number of chemical industries and thermal power plants which contribute to changes in physicochemical characteristics of the coastal waters. Long term monitoring is required in order to understand the fluctuating trends of water quality in this area. The present study aimed to monitor the physicochemical characteristics of the coastal water at Tuticorin from 2012 to 2017. Sample collection was conducted for all the seasons of each year throughout the study period to understand the variations in physicochemical characteristics in the coastal water. A regression trend line was plotted based on the data which enables us to understand that water quality is deteriorating in the study area. Such long term studies are essential to determine the actual fate of any coastal area. Currently the area is yet to be termed as polluted; however measures must be taken to reduce the discharge of pollutants.
