Abstract
Abstract
A 1-year-and-3-month-old girl was admitted to our hospital after an initial episode of peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis (PDRP) following a broken Tenckhoff catheter. On the 10th day of treatment, 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the patient’s isolates and comparative sequence identity analyses revealed the bacterium responsible for peritonitis as Gordonia sputi. An antimicrobial agent (ampicillin) was selected based on the minimum inhibitory concentration, and after a treatment course spanning 3 weeks, no recurrence was observed. PDRP caused by Gordonia species manifests sporadically after Tenckhoff catheter breakage. Further, PDRP caused by Gordonia species often recur, and the Tenckhoff catheter is removed. However, in many cases, the recurrence is due to a short duration of antimicrobial therapy. As already known, 16S rRNA gene sequencing is useful for diagnosing Gordonia species. Further studies are needed regarding the choice of antimicrobial agents and the duration of administration.
