Abstract
Geological sensitive areas can be mapped using geological terrain mapping approach because this approach is on site combination of geological and terrain features. The objective of this geological terrain mapping in the Ranau area is to provide systematic geological input for landuse planning through the production of various thematic maps to assist in the planning for the future and for the use as a guideline in the approval of construction projects in the Ranau area as well as would assist local authorities, town planners, architects, engineers and stakeholders to control development to ensure the safety of property and public lives. Ranau is located in the highlands central part of Sabah where seismic activities and geohazard phenomena is active due to its complex geological setting. Past tectonic activity causing the occurrences of complex geological setting and active faults movement in the Ranau region. Some of these faults are active and capable to produce seismic activity at any time. The area traversed by the fault zone is prone to instability particularly the threat of geohazard such as landslides, rock falls, debris flow, soil creep and soil settlement. Due to geohazard threat, thus development planning in the Ranau area should be controlled and managed so that areas that tthat underlain by geologically sensitive can be avoided from being developed. The results of geological terrain mapping in Ranau area showed that 32% had low to moderate geotechnical constraints while 68% had high to very high geotechnical constraints.
