Abstract

Abstract The optimal integration of distributed generators such as diesel generators into the Iraq power systems is significant in providing flexibility in localized areas and may support to reduce the number of blackouts. The optimal location and sizing of the diesel generators is a suitable way for improving the operation of distribution networks and increase the generation supply. This paper presents a methodology to obtain the suitable size of diesel generators at the suitable bus locations in the power distribution network of Ziyounah district in the Baghdad area. An optimization tool based GA with an objective of improving the network performance, and reducing the real power losses, stabilizing the grid voltage has been presented. This optimization technique also contributes to reducing acoustic noise level from existing generators that are integrated at the neighbourhood area. Results showed that the selection of capacities and locations of generators based on the highest value of Network Performance Index (NPI) helps to overall system improvement such as voltage profile improvement, and real loss reduction. The result also showed that the obtaining of the suitable locations for connection the diesel generators with the help of NPI leads to savings in electricity due to reduction in the real power loss of the distribution network.
