Abstract

Abstract This study provides a method to construct a collaborative multidisciplinary design optimization (CMDO) framework to be used in conceptual analysis of a complex engineering product. As its named implies, the CMDO framework, should be developed through the joint efforts of a team. Both technical and collaborative aspects should therefore be taken into account to provide a generic guideline. The proposed guideline to facilitate CMDO implementation in conceptual design is based on information gathered from a course project that included 40 students at Linköping University. An exploratory approach is used to clarify the technical/collaboration challenges, including questionnaires and extensive interviews with students. The guideline has been established to handle the challenges and difficulties of MDO implementation. It provides a handbook (step-by-step) approach to realize a CMDO framework in conceptual design. Preliminary results include an ontology to enable the use of CMDO, the collaboration strategy and a generic guideline.
