Abstract

Whether teaching online or in-person, instructors will gain from teaching strategies to help them frame and implement their own course on the history of the Indian Ocean. The great time depth of the Indian Ocean world provides multiple ways to consider periodization, and students will benefit from grappling with the vast geographical space from a variety of interactive assignments, whether they are making their own maps or using Google Earth to explore. Primary sources and novels are important ways to connect students to this history. The chapter details specific texts as well as techniques, on how to approach them, from social annotation to critical book reviews.
