Yo Era Indígena: Race, Modernity, and the Transformational Politics of Transnational Labor

Abstract

This chapter examines the experience of several indigenous communities in the Bracero Program. Recognizing the shifting meanings of race that indigenous migrants experienced in the United States, this chapter explores the formation of mid-twentieth-century racial constructs in Mexico and the subsequent role of indigeneity in the context of US and Mexican state nation-building projects.
