Abstract

This research is a cross-sectional study conducted to determine the prevalence of people working in textile mills diagnosed or having asthma-like symptoms and risk factors affecting asthma. Between July - September 2019, 1500 textile workers in textile factories in Hatay, become the universe of the research, 462 workers in factories accepted the research constituted the sample. Survey form: Based on the phase I form of the "European Community Respiratory Health Survey”, developed by the researcher. Analyses are made in SPSS 25.0 program; number, percentage, mean, chi square, were made with the Mann Whitney U test. The prevalence of occupational asthma has determined as 4.9%, and the prevalence of asthma-like symptoms is 64.9%. According to our research, current risk of being asthma in women is higher than man. Asthma and symptoms like asthma in workers who has atopy symptoms occur more is determined. Being asthma in workers who is smoking is clearly more than non smokers. Symptoms like asthma in workers without a mask occurs more. In this research there isn’t statistical relationship between exposing time to dust, departments of work, body mass index and asthma, symptoms asthma. As a result, the prevalence of asthma is 4.9%, while the prevalence of asthma-like symptoms is 64.9%. This shows that more than half of the workers are candidates for asthma. According to results, developing programs for workers to quit smoking, reducing exposure to dust and supporting the use of masks is recommended.
