Abstract
Field studies were performed on several lime kilns to establish a correlation between the size of reburned lime nodules and their residual carbonate content. Nodules with a diameter smaller than 20–30 mm have a low, uniformly distributed residual carbonate content. Larger nodules have an uncalcined core and thus contain significantly more residual carbonate. Mills that test only small nodules for residual carbonate may have much lime mud dead load unknowingly circulating in the lime cycle.
