Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between the fantastic, trauma, and detective fiction and also explains the role of the fantastic as a medium that unmasks traumatizing events that happened in the past. As resistance to classic detective fiction that shapes the reader`s perception of reality and crime according to male-dominated discourse, Kate Atkinson and Ahmet Ümit elaborate on the question of reality and crime by integrating fantastic elements into their detective novels. This paper suggests that Atkinson and Ümit employ the fantastic to subvert patriarchal cultures by leading the reader to discover silenced narratives and by giving a voice to the marginalized people.
