AbstractThe authors examine the state of submarine cable systems and conditions affecting potential widespread deployment of new spatial division multiplexing technologies, such as multicore optical fibre. The authors address areas such as cable capacity requirements, techno‐economic constraints, multicore fibre characteristics, and performance and other necessary technology advances.
