1. These results show that all the mVOCs are 218 highly soluble in water and urine. A good correlation (R 2 = 0.97, slope = 1.001) between the 219 water:air and urine:air PCs was observed for most of the mVOCs studied (the 17 mVOCs with 220 water:air PCs below 1000) (Figure 1). Nevertheless, two mVOCs, namely pent-2-en-1-ol and 2-221 ethyl-1,6-dioxaspiro [4.4] nonane, deviated from this correlation and showed a greater affinity for 222 urine than for water. The reason is not yet clear, probably due to a particular affinity for proteins 223 such as albumin that can be present in minor concentrations. These two compounds are the only 224 ones with water:air and urine:air values greater than 1000. Further studies are needed to verify if 225 this applies to other mVOCs with water:air partition coefficient greater than 1000;PCs values ranged between 16 and 2210, and 217 urine:air PCs ranged between 14 and 3586
