1. Recent findings show that increases in the maternal mortality rate between 2004 and 2017 can be attributed to a change in how data from death certificates classified maternal mortality. Since 2018, these metrics have been updated to more accurately identify pregnancy-related deaths. No matter how the mortality rate is calculated, Black women remain at higher risk for mortality.
