GOP's reach for the first time in decades. 45 Ahead of the race, pollsters rated the seat anywhere from a tossup to a practically sure thing for the Republican Party, with FiveThirtyEight -a popular online poll aggregator -giving the Democrats just a 19% chance of victory. 46 Despite this rare opportunity, however, the election featured something of a political mismatch: a contest between former Democratic Minority Leader of the Ohio House of Representatives Emilia Sykes, and Republican attorney -and former "Miss Ohio" -Madison Gesiotto Gilbert. Supported by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the Democratic Party's primary campaign vehicle for candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, Sykes's campaign employed a twopronged messaging strategy: educating voters on Sykes's record in the state legislature while simultaneously criticizing her Republican opponent for her extreme stance on abortion rights.
