Abstract
Abstract
In the present study, the weldability of friction welded polyamide 6 was investigated. Friction welding was conducted at a rotation speed of 2800 rpm and varying friction durations of 8, 12 and 16 seconds. It was found that the hardness of the sample did not change, but the tensile properties of the PA 6 material significantly decreased for the 8 s friction duration condition. In all samples, the tensile fracture occurred at the boundary towards the heat affected zone. The fractographic examination of the fractured PA 6 specimen showed brittle rupture of the specimen welded with 8 s friction duration. The optical microscopy, SEM and tensile test analysis suggested that the bonding line is well established in the welds. In contrast to the non-welded samples, the welded samples showed 55 % of the tensile strength.
