Abstract
(1) The normal structure of the hepato-pancreas of Ligia is described. There are two different and distinct kinds of cells present in the gland tubules; the one of large size and columnar shape and containing fatty droplets, the other smaller, oval or wedge-shaped, less numerous, but filled with granules of mucigen.
(2) In all cases the cells are enclosed in a thin envelope of chitin and therefore do not form a syncytium.
(3) The changes produced in these cells by (a) fatigue, electrically induced, (q) pilocarpine, (c) strychnine, are described. Pilocarpine acts powerfully on the columnar cells, leaving the oval ones unaffected.
