Abstract
This chapter traces the evolution of grocery shopping, spotlighting the rise of e-commerce in the sector, particularly since 2020 due to COVID-19. The pandemic accelerated digital sales growth, condensing a decade's progress into mere months. This shift towards convenient, time-saving shopping methods was instrumental in integrating e-commerce into the food industry, including the fresh fruit and vegetable market. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, e-commerce became a vital food distribution tool, bolstering supply chain resilience. The chapter reviews the status of online grocery shopping, discussing customer hesitations and strategies to boost market share. Urging retailers to modernize business models, restructure supply chains, and develop efficient, eco-friendly local food delivery systems. Policy suggestions and vital investment areas for sustainable e-commerce development are presented. It advocates for urban governments to foster a supportive environment that capitalizes on e-commerce while minimizing its adverse impacts on traditional retail, traffic, and greenhouse gas emissions.
