Opportunities and Challenges of Digital Tourism in the New Normal

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the tourism industry in Indonesia. Since February 2020, the number of foreign tourists entering Indonesia has decreased very drastically, and the peak occurred in April 2020 with only 158,000 tourists. Digital tourism is a strategy to introduce, spread the beauty of tourism, and promote various tourist destinations. This chapter aimed to explore the opportunities and challenges of digital tourism. This digital tourism is a trend to be developed as solution to the tourism sector, which suffered due to the pandemic COVID-19. There are opportunities of digital tourism, improvement in creative economy, social media usage, content creator, while the challenges are culture, literacy and awareness, networking facilities. The elaboration of this chapter is expected to be used as a reference for the stakeholders in planning strategies of the tourism sector.
