Abstract
Transitioning from contact to online learning has been highly complex for institutions of higher learning globally. One of the less discussed areas of online learning is the student's need for motivation as the leading players in the process. The chapter focuses on learning about preferences of learning, physical equipment and printed documents, home facilities and disturbance, social engagement, focus and confusion, limited space, time, emotional issues, employment, and supporting material as challenges to students' academic motivation. Further developed a higher education needs for students on the online learning (HENSOL) framework that reveals the needs for students and online learning and provides recommendations to those in power, especially in the higher education sector. Some of the recommendations are to invest more in learning platforms that are more efficient and less cost-effective to enhance a culture of synchronizing learning by ensuring that study material is available 24/7 for students wherever they are.
