Abstract
This chapter describes an after-school program for girls from disenfranchised populations with the goals of imparting skills and literacies that could assist them in leading strong (healthy), smart (educated), and bold (independent) lives. The program was devised and is carried out by Girls Inc. of Long Island, a girls' empowerment organization, and part of the national Girls Inc. network, who delivers innovative, research-based programs designed to address the unique needs and strengths of girls. The program strives to close the gap between academics and life skills as it serves youth in Grades 5-12 in an all-girl, pro-girl environment. Since many school systems create an environment that perpetuates sexism and continues to place gender roles on students, the intention is for the girls to let go of the stereotypes and reach their maximum potential.
