Abstract

Using a combination of critical race theory, essentialism, and critical pedagogy, this chapter presents a theoretical framework that strengthens the connection between theory and pedagogy in the careful selection of children's literature for all classrooms. If teachers took these three theories and applied them to their choices in literature to which their students are exposed, it would encourage these future global citizens to create their own identity instead of one that is created for them by others. In order to move forward with this theoretically influenced new way of thinking, teachers must also be willing to adopt the practice of culturally responsive teaching. This chapter will discuss not only the theoretical underpinnings that support a social justice and equity-driven literature selection, but it will also propose an action plan for teachers.
