Abstract
Genre refers to purposes, audiences, and communicative expectations. Proficient readers use genre to extract meaning from what they read, and proficient writers use their knowledge about genres to effectively compose. In the developing strategic learners (DSL) curriculum, genre refers to text structure, vocabulary, and syntactic choices. The purpose of the chapter is to explain the pedagogical principles and instructional components of the DSL curriculum and how they are applied across genres. For this, specific resources and examples are shared. Further, the chapter comments on procedures used for differentiation utilizing formative assessments and closes with guidelines for administrators and for sustainable and feasible professional development efforts.
