Abstract

This chapter provides a perspective on technological applications that can be used to achieve and maintain learner motivation in online learning environments. In this context, it focuses on the definition of online learning, motivation, and motivation models used in online learning environments, which form the theoretical basis of the book chapter. The chapter emphasizes that learner motivation is an important issue in online learning environments. It then explains the role and importance of Web 2.0 tools in teaching processes and learner motivation. Finally, Web 2.0 tools, including technological applications that can be used to motivate learners in online learning environments, are discussed in detail. The chapter provides the rationale for including appropriate Web 2.0 tools in the process by designing motivational instruction in the light of theoretical foundations to ensure learner motivation in online learning environments.
