Abstract
Democracy in Nigeria and Brazil have become more of a mockery due to the myriad challenges incapacitating both the process and the practice. Democracy in the duo have been characterized by elitism, insensitivity to the needs of the masses, comfort of the few, inequality, and corruption. This study seeks to identify the gaps in the democratic tenets and the practice of democracy in Nigeria and Brazil. Procedural democracy theory was used as basis for the analysis. The study employs secondary sources of data, textbooks, reputable journals, newspapers, official publications and the internet to perform a comparative analysis of threats to democracy in Nigeria and Brazil. Data gathered were analyzed descriptively with content analysis. The study recommends that political office should be made less attractive. The rule of law must be upheld while the judiciary should be allowed to remain independent, incorruptible and non-partisan.
